 Flying to Vietnam

The national airline is Vietnam Airlines (VN) (www.vietnamairlines.com) who run direct flights from London Gatwick to Hanoi. It is served by many airlines via nearby hubs, including Cathay Pacific (www.cathaypacific.com) and Thai International (www.thaiairways.com). Flights to Vietnam are at their most expensive around Christmas, New Year and Tet (January/February).

Air notes:

A new international terminal was opened at Ho Chi Minh City in 2007 but plans have already been approved for an out-of-town airport which will relegate Tan Son Nhat to domestic flights only.

Flight times:

From London to Hanoi takes approximately 17 hours and from Los Angeles 20 hours.

Noi Bai International Airport

Airport Code: HAN. Location: The airport is around 35km (21 miles) north of the city. Website: N/A.Public transport description: Vietnam Airlines operates a bus service into the city and its office on Quang Trung Street and there is a public bus to Kim Ma Bus Station. Metered taxis are also available.

It is possible to cross into Vietnam from China by rail from Beijing- Dong Dang-Hanoi and back. Contact Vietnam Railways (tel: (04) 3942 3949; www.vr.com.vn) for details.

A very useful number in Vietnam is 1080 where English-speaking operators can give information on timetables.

Driving to Vietnam

There are routes to China through Lang Son, Mong Cai and Lao Cai, to Cambodia through Moc Bai and Xaxia and also to Laosthrough Lao Bao, Nam Can, Na Meo, Tay Trang and Cau Trieu.

There is a regular bus service from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, operated by the Saigon Passenger Transport Company (tel: (08) 3920 3623; www.saigonbus.com.vn). There are bus services from Vientiane, Laos to Hanoi and Savannakhet, Laos to Hue and tickets for these must be bought in person from the bus station and neither journey is the most comfortable of rides. There are no buses travelling from China that cross into Vietnam. Passengers have to change buses at the border.

The only international arrival point into Vietnam with a regular ferry service is Chau Doc in the Mekong Delta. There are daily speedboat ferries from Phnom Penh along the Mekong River taking 4.5 – 5 hours. Cruise ships call at Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, Danang and Haiphong.

Day 1: Hochiminh city and arrival

  • Arrive to Tan Son Nhat airport, meeting your tour guide and driver. Pick up and transfer to your hotel. Having rest at your until 15.00pm from your hotel, riding on a rickshaw for an adventure winding through the sights, sounds & smells of this historic metropolis – the ideal way to experience the city. Stopping at the 30 – 40 park, taking a walking tour to visit some French colonial structures including Notre Dame Cathedral, the Old Central Post Office. Visit Ben Thanh market where anything and everything is for sale.

Day 2 : Ho Chi Minh – Cao Dai Temple – Cu Chi tunnels (B/L/_)

  • Breakfast at your hotel. At 8.30am, drive west to Tay Ninh, the centre of Caodaism. O­n arrival we attend the fantastic mid-day temple service when the followers fill the hall wearing colored robes, a symbol of the curious combination of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. O­n the way back, stop to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels, an underground network of tunnels constructed by Vietnamese fighters during the struggle for independence. The tunnels contained hospitals, accommodation, etc. and were used as a military base for the Vietcong during the American war.

Day 4 :  Hochiminh – My Tho – Ben Tre – Can Tho (B/L/_)

On arrival at My Tho, visit Vinh Trang pagoda, take a leisurely boat ride along the river, view stilt houses, fruit plantations and fishing villages along the river bank. Proceed to Tortoise islet, have lunch in the orchard garden.   • Breakfast at your hotel. Our guide and driver welcome you at your hotel in Hoi An and then leave Hoi An Ancient Town for Quang Ngai Province. Along the way, you can see Chu Lai Combat Base on Highway 1. Arriving Quang Ngai you will start to visit My Lai Museum for learning about the war in this area in the past. You will reach to My Lai Massacre where you spend an hour there to see the complex of Massacre with Monument. The House of Evidence where documents, photos, and objects which testify to the massacre such as shirts, a pair of sandal of a killed child, all kinds of cups and plates, cookers and pans holed by cartridge, and wooden bells used for reciting prayers. You will have a deep impression of the part in Vietnam War. Have lunch at local restaurant.
  • Pm: You spend more time to walk around the village to learn more experience of local people here. After that, the driver and guide take you back Hoi An. Arrive Hoi An ancient town in the afternoon.

Visit the royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc, the Imperial Citadel from where the Nguyen Dynasty ruled between 1802 and 1945, and the ruins of the Purple Forbidden City.

Then  BUT THAP pagoda, DONG KY – carpentry village. Here they made furniture inlaid with mother of pearl and finished off with layer of clear lacquer. In laying the mother of pearl is highly labour intensive, see how it is delicately sawed info fine fish-bone sliver and paints takingly set into wood.

Day 16: Ha Noi  – Mai Chau (B/L/_)

  • Breakfast at your hotel. At 8.00am, depart for Hoa Binh province and up then to Mai Chau valley. This scenic drive takes around four hours. One the way, visit Thay Pagoda and Tay Phuong Pagoda  or Sung Phuc Pagoda. Continue your trip to Mai Chau. Along the way we pass fields of tapioca and sugar cane as well as rice paddies. Upon arriving in Mai Chau valley, we take a short walk around Lac & Poom Coong villages to have the first sights of the White Thai community culture. In the evening, assist to the traditional music and dance show which is performed by The Thai young girls and boys. They all come from this village. Try also some rice alcohol made of traditional plants and local sticky rice.

Day 17: Mai Chau – Ha Noi (B/L/_)

  • Breakfast at the Thai stilt house then we leave the village for half day hiking around. We will pass many different Thai hamlets, through rice fields, hill sides…Stop sometimes to visit local houses and talk with local people. Return to Ha Noi. On the way visit Tram Gian Pagoda.

  • 05 : 00 am – Arrive to Laocai train station. Welcome by your local guide and driver. Picked up at Laocai Train Station to transfer to CanCau market. It takes more than 2 hours to get to CanCau – a small market situated in a valley surrounded by mountains and o­nly 7 km from China. The market deeply shows the typical cultural features of the minorities in remote mountainous areas in Vietnam. Further more, you can enjoy seeing boys and girls in colorful costumes – different colors of the mountains. They attend the market in the hope of finding “the other halves of their lifestyle” and this is also the time for them to chat, to exchange everything among different ethnic peoples through cups of wine sold in the market. Say goodbye to the market and transfer to BacHa. o­n the way, spend time visiting a village of the Flower H’mong and then check in hotel in BacHa. Free to explore the town.

Day 22: Visit Bacha market – Sapa ( B/L/D ) Sunday

  • Breakfast at the hotel. Take a walk to BacHa market. Visit o­ne village and an old building called The H’mong king’s house. Breakfast and the beginning of the day o­n which you visit a big market filled with many different hill-tribe peoples. This is the most colorful market in North Vietnam. At the market, you have chance to enjoy BacHa people’s simple but unique kinds of food with special wines made from rice, cassavas, corn and different sorts of fruits such as plumps, apples, peaches… talking to the minorities through the guide’s interpretation. Leave the market for the H’mong King’s house (King Hoang A Tuong) built by the French colonists and the Chinese in 1920. Return the town for lunch. In the afternoon, spend time visiting another village (BanPho village) Say good bye to BacHa and get back to Sapa. o­n the way back, drop in to see the Vietnamese and Chinese Harbour Mouth in LaoCai.

  • Breakfast at the hotel then leave from Sapa early at 7:00 AM for CocLy market, which is situated far from Sapa. Enjoy the peaceful life of 6 different minority peoples (Flower H’mong, Black Dzao, Tay, Dzay, HaNhi and Nung). The market is the chance for the minorities to meet and share joy and sorrows after the crops, to exchange one another’s experience. Say goodbye to the market and get down onto a boat along Chay river. You are bound to feel great and find yourselves smaller among high rock mountains and to be surprised at white and breathtakingly waterfalls. The Fairy Cave is located deeply in the rocks. Get off the boat to visit a village of the Tay Minority (TrungDo village) by the river. After the boat trip, visit a small town – Bao Nhai.
  • Transfer to Lao Cai train station for boarding the Express train to Hanoi (19.30pm – 04.30am).

Arrive in Ninh Binh province at 10.30am, then we visit Hoa Lu, an ancient capital of Vietnam from 968 AD to 1010 AD during the Dinh and early Le Dynasties. In Hoa Lu ancient capital left behide two small temples of the Kings each one nearly a thousand years old
  • Short break for lunch at a restaurant near Tam Coc. After lunch, we take sampans to visit Tam Coc, which is literally known “ Three Caves” First Cave is the longest one which is considered a real rainbow in the water in the morning time stretching on both sides of the Ngo Dong River. The quiet movements of the oars create a sort of musical rhythm inside the cave. As the boat leaves the cave, you can see what seems to be an old man with a white breard fishing, fairy flying in the clouds, peasants collecting fuel and a group of white goats grazing on the hills. Then we move to the Second Cave and the Third Cave.

  • After your breakfast, at 08.30 am our guide will welcome you at hotel and take you to the boat landing for visit Thien Mu pagoda by dragon boat. Along this famous river you will have chance to enjoy the beautiful landscapes along two banks of river. Step on to visit the most ancient pagoda of Viet Nam – lies on Northern of Hue city. Next, you go on visiting The Citadel where Nguyen Kings lived in the past including Flag Tower, the Forbidden Purple City such as Five Phoenix Tower, Thai Hoa Palace, Nine Urn Dynasty.
  • Continue visiting the complex of Nguyen Kings’ mausoleums for more experiences of architecture of Kings. Factually, there are three mausoleums still keep original architecture. You can choose two of them for visiting including Tu Duc, Khai Dinh or Minh Mang. You can have chance to see more special of Hue is handicraft villages such as conical hat-making, incense – making.

Day 10: Hue – Da Nang – Tra Que vegetable village –  Hoi An (B/L/_)

  • Breakfast at the hotel. Depart for Hoi An via Da Nang, stop for photos and sightseeing at the Hai Van pass, Lang Co beach, the Marble mountain.
  • Visit the countryside of Hoi An for more enjoyment at Tra que vegetables village – a famous one in Hoi An. Walk around for visiting and knowing more of the way local people plant variety of vegetables.

Day 11 : Hoi An town – My Son (B/L/_)

  • Breakfast at the hotel. Make a walking trip to visit Hoi An ancient town. Wander around Hoi An you have an enjoyment of old streets, houses…visit Tan Ky house, Japanese Bridge, Phuc Kien Hall, Sa Huynh Museum, local market. You can also have time to enjoy traditional music performance in old house. Once more special of Hoi An ancient town is spending time to go shopping at silk shops, lattern shops for experience of handicarft villages and make tailor with reasonable price.
  • Afternoon, Leave for visiting My Son Hollyland – the ruins of Cham people and was an imperial city during Cham dynasty. Here you have more chance to learn about of architecture of Cham people. You can see a large complex of religious relics that comprises more than 65 architectural works. In 1999, UNESCO labeled the Cham architecture in My Son as a World Cultural Heritage Site.

Day 12: Hoi An – Da Nang – Nha Trang city (B/L/_ )

  • Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the airport for boarding the flight VN1943 to Nha Trang (07.25am – 08.30am). Pick up and transfer to the city center.
  • In the afternoon, staring the city tour to visit Long Son Pagoda, Mountain Church and Ponagar Tower, Chong Promontory. We end at  Dam market for everything for sale.
  • Return to your hotel.

Day 13: Nha Trang – Cai River – Ancient House – Hot spring center (B/L/_)

  • Breakfast at the hotel. Pick up at the hotel, transfer to harbour. Find out the local’s activities in Cai estuary where the local fisherman gather their boats and repair them after finish the voyage. Then, visit Song Thuy Shipyard, take a look and photo Hang pagoda.
  • Travel along Cai river to watch the life of local people. Visit clay pot village, the mat-making village. Visit an ancient house, admire the ancient house for many years ago with the art sculptured furnitures. Enjoy fresh fruits in the garden.
  • Have lunch with local speciality food at “Nha Trang xua” restaurant. Visit Thap Ba Hot Mineral Spring Center, relax and soak in mud pool or hot mineral water pool (pay ticket which enjoy Mud Bath for yourself).

Day 14: Nha Trang and its off shore island ( B / L / _ )

Day 15: Nha Trang – Ho Chi Minh – Cu Chi tunnels (B/L/_)

  • Breakfast at your hotel. Free until transfer to the Cam Ranh airport for boarding the flight VJ8855 to Ho Chi Minh (11.15am – 12.10pm).
  • Meeting your tour guide and driver on arrival. Depart for Cu Chi tunnels an underground network of tunnels constructed by Vietnamese fighters during the struggle for independence. The tunnels contained hospitals, accommodation, etc. and were used as a military base for the Vietcong during the American war.
  • Drive back to HCMC.

Day 16: Hochiminh – My Tho – Sadec –  Can Tho (B/L/_)

  • Breakfast at your hotel. Leave Ho Chi Minh city, enjoy the scenic journey along the National Highway bordered by green rice fields.
  • On arrival at My Tho, visit Vinh Trang pagoda, take a leisurely boat ride along the river, view stilt houses, fruit plantations and fishing villages along the river bank. Proceed to Tortoise islet, have lunch in the orchard garden. Then a boat ride to An Khanh – a less touristy attraction in Ben Tre, enjoy cruising on a hand-rowed sampan under the shade of water coconut trees along natural canals.
  • Have a short cycling tour, then enjoy seasonal fruit & honey tea to the sound of “Southern Vietnamese folk music”, performed by the locals. Visit a family business which epitomizes the idyllic rural lifestyle, taste delicious coconut candy & observe the pastoral life as you roam through the fruit plantations and villages.
  • Proceed to Sadec, board a sampan for Xeo Quyt, a former Viet Cong base in a forest during the Vietnam war (rowing sampan or a walk).
  • After that, proceed to Can Tho.

Day 17: Cai Rang floating market – Tra Su Sanctuary – Chau Doc (B/L/_)

  • After breakfast, take a leisurely boat trip to explore the picturesque tributaries of the Lower Mekong river (Bassac River), then proceed to Cai Rang floating markets which are the liveliest in the whole religion.
  • Have you ever tasted Vietnamese vermicelli soup? Well, now go and see how it is made. Then wander around the village and meet the friendly local people and experience how to pass a “Monkey bridge” which is built by only one stem of bamboo. Visit the orchard garden.
  • Stop for lunch. Proceed to Chau Doc, continue the tour to visit Tra Su, getting to the wild birds Sanctuary, cruising smoothly with small boats to discover the arrays of splendid canals deep into the forest, watching storks, cranes and other tropical birds.
  • On the way back stop by to visit Sam Mountain, the Cave pagoda (if time permitted).

Day 19: Phnom Penh (B/L/_)

  • After breakfast, we will witness the reign of terror during the Khmer Rouge Regime by visiting the Killing Field of Choeung Ek, S21 prison and the Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocidal Crime.
  • In the afternoon, visit to Russian or Central Market and visit the famous Wat Phnom.

Day 20: Phnom Penh – Siem Reap – Angkor Wat (B/L/_)

  • Upon arrival at Siem Reap airport, meets and transfer to your hotel for relaxation.
  • In the afternoon, visit to Prasat Kravan, East Mebon, Pre Rup and Preah Kan and the Small Circuit to see Banteay Kdei, Srah Srang, Ta Prohm, Ta Keo, Thommanon, and Chausay Tevoda.

Day 22: Siem Reap (B)

  • Breakfast at the hotel. Morning, our tour guide and driver will take you to orphanage. You will stay there to play with children and assist them do their life activities.
  • Late afternoon, continue to Angkor Night market where have 240 souvenirs shops which sells traditional Cambodian made handicrafts from clothing’s, silk, painting and photography’s, jewelries, wood and stone carvings.

Day 23: Siem Reap – departure (B)
